Procreate

An ongoing creative project that fills a gap in astrology and ethnic representation

Black Zodiac began as a personal project to illustrate some of my favorite past and contemporary R&B singers and songwriters. The series has now expanded into a small business including authors, artists, superheroes, leaders, and more.

Hand-drawn digital portraits of Black authors, artists, heroes and leaders

Combining my interests in astrology, Black culture, illustration and Art Nouveau, I created the first Black Zodiac portrait 2020. Since then, the collection has expanded intto a small business with over 40 individual portraits and occassional custom commission.

I vend at several art markets and maker events throughout the year, selling prints, stickers, greeting cards and candles. My work is available in gift shops and stores locally in Portland and nationwide.

Process

Sketch

After choosing a reference photograph to work from, I create a loose sketch of the form and shapes of the face, establishing the foundation of the piece

sketch

Color

Then I lay down broad color blocks to define the overall tones and mood of the piece, setting the palette before any refinement begins

sketch

Render

The piece to life through blending and shaping. I build dimension and realism until the piece feels tangible and three-dimensional

Additional polish, hard light and deeper shadows to finish the piece. Add any textures like metal or sheen and refine anything else that needs a touch up
